The Department of Informatics and Networked Systems congratulates PhD Student Yongsu Ahn and faculty member Yu-Ru Lin on winning the 2020 Best Paper Award in ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems. The paper, "PolicyFlow: Interpreting Policy Diffusion in Context," describes a visual interactive system which they developed to explore time-evolving patterns of policy adoption. This work combines visual analytics with text and network analyses to study how policies may spread across different geographic regions (states within the United States, in this case). The PolicyFlow system is evaluated using real-world policy datasets and qualitative interviews with domain experts. The paper reveals the benefits of using visual analytics to understand policy adoption
