Outreach for Cybersecurity Education

During Spring 2021, Ahmed Ibrahim (faculty in DINS) offered multiple “Hands-on WiFi Hacking” workshops in different avenues. To promote cybersecurity education, Ibrahim offered a 2-day workshop* in January 2021 for 37 students from 25 institutions in 15 states to (1) learn how to locate and identify WiFi access points (a.k.a. reconnaissance), (2) understand the conditions under which WEP and WPA2 can be hacked, and (3) hack up to four WEP access points (with different settings), in addition to a WPA2 access point.  Dr. Ibrahim also offered a 2-day workshop* to 29 educators from 14 states to learn the same skills as well as how to offer the same experience in their institutions.  To reach out to working professionals, Dr. Ibrahim offered a 6-hour workshop in April 2021 sponsored by RedChairPGH for women working in technology who would like to explore a cybersecurity topic and another 4-hour workshop through BSidesNoVA in June 2021.
